I suppose turning off communications for a fortnight is as close as one can come to a holiday around here. I trust you'll forgive me for falling off the face of the, ah, Barge. After spending two years in this place, I felt a break was long overdue.

Anyway, it appears I've missed some departures, as well as new arrivals. Since introductions are in order, I'll begin: I'm Major Henry West. Welcome to the Barge. You've been promised salvation, no doubt, or perhaps a favour from the Admiral. I could tell you myself what to expect, but I'm sure you'll find out well enough on your own. We're about overdue for another crisis, after all.

A story of betrayal, perhaps? Would that be noteworthy?

We'll start this story with a man. And this man wants someone else dead. But he doesn't want to do it himself. Instead, he enlists someone else. A certain solider. Now, this soldier has no intention of following through with the murder, but he would like to know the target, if only for information gathering. So he agrees to it, gets the name and goes quiet.

Two days later, the man betrays him and tells the soldier's companion about the deal and the soldier's companion goes straight to the soldier's warden.

And you're telling me... the soldier's companion didn't speak with the soldier first?

No he did not. He came after the fact, claiming to have done it to "help." And then promptly hid like a rat.

It's a sorry day when one can't trust his own companions. What's been done about it?

Nothing's been done to the soldier, but the companion has been...trimmed away.

Good. His priorities were made quite clear when he went to the wardens first. Betrayal should not be given a second chance to occur again.

No. And it won't. I will not tolerate disloyalty in him or anyone else I associate with.

Expect dramatics to follow soon enough. He was, needless to say, quite unhappy with the outcome.

Dramatics are so common here, I expect they'll be drowned out quickly. [Pause.] Billy's rather fond of him, though, so I may hear about it from his end.

My apologies on that. I'm sure it'll blow over soon enough when he finds something else to occupy his time. [Long, long pause.]

Or he hangs himself.

No apology is necessary, really.

[West pauses, himself.]

A pointless gesture wrought with emotion. Expect righteous indignation from the wardens and his friends, should that occur. I'm sure they'll consider it your duty to love your betrayer.

I'm prepared for it. It's happened before after all and I am very used to playing the villain.

Only this time, I have truly done nothing wrong other than protect myself against a man whose loyalties are in question. I did not lay a hand on him, and I said no harsh words.

The fault lies not with me.

Who was the man who told him, if you don't mind the inquiry?

Ah. And somehow, I'm not terribly surprised.

The strange part? He wanted me to do it and then turn around and blame it on him.

The man's motivations have never made any sense to me. Did he simply wish for you to agree so that he could tell Judas?

I'm not sure. He seemed strangely interested in our relationship. And sometimes seemed to want me to trap into saying that I was...not fit to be with him? Something of that nature.

I suppose I do owe him a small debt for showing me how Judas truly is.

I don't see how that's any business of his. Nevertheless, now you know with certainty two more people you mustn't trust on the Barge, and with minimal loss. Better to find out now than when it truly matters.

Can I trust you, West? Should I be trusting you?

That's a question only you can answer. I can tell you, at least, that I would never go to a warden before an inmate.

A admirable quality. You've never done anything to take that trust away, West. But still...it's a terrible blow to have to question things you thought you knew before.

Agreed. And that's all this place seems to do. There's no salvation, only the dismantling of who you are.
